Habitat for Humanity of York County’s Women Build seeks to include and engage women in all areas of the Habitat process, while emphasizing their involvement on the construction site.  As the national partner of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, Lowe’s offers training clinics for women on a variety of construction skills.  For those who may not already have experience in construction, the clinics equip them to volunteer on the construction site with a local Habitat affiliate.

In preparation for Habitat for Humanity of York County’s 2012 Women Build, the Lowe’s in Rock Hill will be offering five training clinics.  These clinics are free and open to women interested volunteering with the Women Build.  Lowe’s in Rock Hill is located at 1350 Springdale Road.

All of the training clinics will be offered on a Saturday morning from 8:00AM – 9:00AM according to the following schedule:

• February 11 – How to safely use hand and power tools
• March 10 – How to install exterior siding (& light overview of framing)
• April 7 – How to install insulation and drywall
• May 5 – How to finish interior with paint and trim
• June 2 – How to frame walls & roof (conducted offsite at Habitat for Humanity ReStore)

Women Build’s Impact

We make a REAL impact.  Recently 2011 Women Build homeowner Tammy H. stated,  “I never thought I could help build my own home.  I went from homeless to my own house.” This impact is echoed in the words of a dedicated Women Build volunteer who said of Tammy and the Women Build, “Working on Tammy’s house created many friendships and gave women a chance to participate in the hands-on construction of a home.  The program empowers women which is very important.  They need to know they can do this…know they can help each other in this way.”

Habitat for Humanity of York County’s work to provide affordable housing in York County has helped Habitat for Humanity International rank as the sixth largest homebuilder on Builder magazine’s top 100 list.  With 6,032 closings in 2010, this is the second time Habitat for Humanity has placed in the top 10.

“Our placement on the Builder 100 list is a testament to what can be accomplished when people work together,” said Larry Gluth, senior vice president of U.S. and Canada for Habitat for Humanity International. “So many families in the United States and around the world face an incredible need for affordable housing, and this need only increases during challenging economic times. Habitat works every day to help these families, and we are grateful for the generosity of our donors, volunteers and advocates who have joined our efforts to help families obtain safe, decent and affordable homes and to strengthen communities.”

In 2010, Habitat for Humanity of York County helped three families obtain affordable housing.  In 2011, the affiliate has completed one home in Rock Hill and one home in Clover.  New home dedications for these homes occurred on June 29^th and July 1^st.  The very popular Women Build began July 16^th and the Home for the Holidays Build begins September 10^th.  Since 1988, the York County affiliate has built 48 homes.

The Builder 100 list is an annual compilation of the largest homebuilders in the country. In 2009, Habitat for Humanity ranked eighth on the list with 5,294 closings, marking the first time the organization made it to the top 10.
